8 Easter Activities for Seniors

easter activities for seniorsEaster is just around the corner, so now is the perfect time to start planning some fun activities to ring in this spring holiday. Spending the day or week leading up to Easter doing Easter activities is a great way to get into the festive spirit of the season. We’ve compiled some ideas to make you Easter celebrations more fun and enjoyable this year.

1. Easter Egg Decorating & Hunting

You can always use the traditional Easter egg dye kits or you can try out a new way to dye your boiled eggs. You can try your hand at making natural dyes with vegetable peels or doing a tie dye effect. Pinterest and YouTube have so many creative tutorials on how to create simple, but elevated Easter eggs this year. If dying easter eggs isn’t your thing, you can alternatively decorate plastic eggs with stickers and glitter.

Easter egg hunts may be considered a children’s tradition but it can also be a fun, nostalgic activity for seniors to take part in. In addition to boiled and plastic eggs, foil wrapped chocolate eggs could be a delicious reward for the people who find them. An outdoor Easter egg hunt is also a fun way to soak in some Spring sun and get a little exercise.

2. Listen to Easter Music

Music has been found to be therapeutic and can bring people together. So, spend a day listening to Easter music or have a sing-along at home. Many community centers, churches, and senior centers may have performances or recitals, check you local calendar and attend a community event and enjoy the company of others along with the music.

3. Create Easter Cards

Making Easter cards for your loved ones is a simple craft that can be fun and memorable. For this activity, you just need some cardstock, Easter stickers and other decorations, and markers, pens, or paints. Fold a piece of cardstock in half and decorate with stickers, glitter, and other decorations. Using markers or paint write an Easter message; this can be a joke, a Bible verse, or a Spring inspiration quote. If you are mailing them out be sure to send them no later than 3 days before Easter so they get to their destination on time.

4. Have an Easter baking day

Easter traditions for many families include baked goods. Carrot cake and sugar cookies are popular items people make for Easter. Invite some friends or family members over and bake some of your family’s traditional baked goods or start a new traditions.

5. Have an afternoon tea party

A tea party is a fun way to incorporate the activities we have suggested above. You can serve your decorated eggs and baked goods, give out your crafted Easter cards to your guests, and have an egg hunt to get everyone involved. Decorating with seasonal flowers, balloons, and pastel will create a festive Spring aesthetic.

6. Reminisce about past Easters

Easter is a family tradition that many families celebrate. Spend some time this year reminiscing about your favorite Easters from the past. Write about it or paint a picture to symbolize your memories. Did it involve a family gathering or meal or maybe a memory from your childhood of waiting for the Easter bunny and his treats.

7. Plant flowers

Easter and the Spring season symbolises renewal and rebirth. So what better way to celebrate this time of year than to plant some tulips, hyacinths or daffodils? You can get creative and paint a ceramic pot to put your flowers in to decorate your home or give as a gift to loved ones. Bringing your flowers indoors is a great way to enjoy the new season in your home.

8. Go to church

Many people observe Easter by attending a church service. Look on your local church’s website to see what they’re planning and the times of their services. Some churches have special performances or concerts for Easter or a procession through town. If you aren’t able to attend a physical service, many churches now offer live video services that you can enjoy from the comfort of your own home.

Easter time is traditionally celebrated by gathering with others. If you live alone it can be lonely doing Easter activities on your own. Having an in-home caregiver can relieve some of your loneliness. Many people may think that an in-home caregiver is solely for caring for elderly people. But, they can also provide much needed companionship.
