7 Tips to Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions

Every year many people make New Year’s resolutions. The new year is the perfect time to start anew by changing old habits and creating new routines. However, resolutions are often easier to make than to keep. A lot of people tend to lose steam and abandon their resolutions by February or March. But, with some will and determination, you can succeed at anything you set your mind to. We have compiled a helpful list of tips to help you make sure to stick to your new year’s resolutions this year.

  1. Set a SMART Goal
    • Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-constrained. Resolving to “get in shape” or “lose weight” can be a very vague goal, so creating a specific goal that is realistically attainable and measurable within a time limit can help you to succeed with your resolution. A SMART goal might look like “I will get in shape by walking 30 mins a day for 5 days a week”. You’ll be able to know that you are making progress by looking at how closely you are staying to this goal.
  2. Make a Plan
    • After you have decided on your SMART goal, it is important to come up with a plan of how you will execute it. You will also need to plan for obstacles that might get into the way of achieving your goal. What might you do if you have an unexpected illness or injury or if you miss a couple days? Writing down your goals can help to achieve them by making a list of what needs to be done and the difficulties that might side track you.
  3. Keep a Journal
    • A journal is the perfect place to write down your SMART goals, how you plan on achieving them, and the obstacles that might side track you. Journaling about your successes and struggles can help when you’re going through a rough time, so that you can see how far you’ve come. A journal is also a great place to write about why you hope to achieve your resolution, for the times when you are feeling unmotivated.
  4. Create a Habit
    • The best way to make a lasting change is by making it a habit. If you want to eat healthier, it’s better to make small changes to your diet rather than doing a fad diet that will be hard to maintain over a long period of time. If you want to get in shape, make a commitment to daily walks, yoga practice, or a trip to the gym a habit. Remember that change is a process and there will be slip ups, so don’t be too hard on yourself when the slips happen.
  5. Use an App
    • We are living in a unique time period right now, where most people have a device that can help them keep track of their health and fitness goals. You can find an app to help you build a new habit, track your steps or runs, or even help you to learn a new language or how to meditate. Whatever your resolution is, there is probably an app out there that can help you to achieve it.
  6. Use The Buddy System
    • Find someone who has a similar goal to yours. A support system can help you to achieve your resolution by keeping you motivated and accountable. Having another person to share with successes and challenges can also make it more fun and enjoyable than doing it alone.
  7. Celebrate Your Successes
    • Sticking to your resolution can be difficult especially when you’re going through withdrawals from foods or cigarettes. Focusing on the successes can help keep you positive and motivated. Don’t forget to journal about your success for the days when you are feeling down you can remind yourself of how far you’ve come and what you are capable of. Relapses might happen but it’s better to view it as an opportunity to grow instead of a failure. Rewarding yourself for the small successes will help to move you to the bigger success of achieving your goal.

Just remember to be gentle on yourself and don’t forget to have fun. Change doesn’t happen overnight, it’s going to take time and lots of patience. Believe in yourself and you can achieve your goals.
